CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
INTERNATIONAL WINTER SCHOOL ON VISUAL SURVEILLANCE
December 5-9 2005
Universita` del Sannio, Benevento, Italy
GENERAL
The Universita`
del Sannio's Faculty of Engineering invites you to participate in the 1st
International Winter School on Visual
Surveillance. This winter school is aimed both at postgraduate
research students (e.g. MSc, PhD) who wish to get involved in
research on visual surveillance and at people from industry who
wish to apply the technology to "real world" problems. The winter
school will be one week long in duration. It will be held in the
beautiful Campania region in the south of Italy, hosted by the
Universita` del Sannio in Benevento, Italy.
TOPICS
- Digital image generation and properties
- Image filters and their signal-theoretic background
- Movement detection and segmentation in digital video sequences
- Model-based vision concepts: The top-down approach
- Application: People tracking for visual surveillance
in a distributed surveillance system
Lecturer: Dr Nils T Siebel,
Cognitive Systems Group, Institute of Computer Science,
Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany.

There will be 6 hours of class per day; 4 hours of lectures and an
additional 2 hours of practicals. The practicals take place after
each day's lectures and help to reinforce the lecture material by
applying the theory that was taught in small groups. Assignments
will be solved in the lab using the Matlab environment.
CONTENTS
- Digital image generation and properties:
CCD and CMOS cameras, sampling and quantisation, colour spaces, histograms, image compression (e.g. JPEG)
- Image filters and their signal-theoretic background
The image as a 2D signal, frequency filtering, image
smoothing, derivative filters, edge detection (e.g. Canny),
colour filters
- Movement detection and segmentation in digital video sequences
Background subtraction, simple and adaptive background
models, inclusion of temporal information, post-processing
of motion images (e.g. median filtering)
- Model-based vision concepts: The top-down approach
Top-down vs bottom-up approaches to computer vision
problems, model-based vision, examples of appearance-based
models for object detection, parameter and pose estimation
- Application: People tracking for visual surveillance in a distributed surveillance system
Challenges and solutions for "real world" visual
surveillance systems, realtime and other constraints,
autonomous or semi-autonomous operation, distributed vs
centralised processing, case study: the Reading People
Tracker.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
There is only a limited number of places available in the winter
school. Applicants who would like to participate in the winter school
should follow the following procedure:
- Send an e-mail with your application by November 10 2005.
- The organisers will check the availability and send you a registration form with payment details.
- The registration form should be filled in and sent back to
the organisers by fax, including a proof of payment, by
November 30 2005.
The registration fees are:
- 150 euro for PhD students and undergraduates.
- 200 euro for post doc and other researchers working directly in a university.
- 300 euro for everybody else.
Social events will take place during the course period. Details on the social programme will be available soon on this page.
